Odesa is a Black Sea port city of about a million people whose main draw is the 19th-century grid of the old town, from Pryvoz in the south to the Potemkin Steps in the north, plus a strip of sandy beaches at Lanzheron and Arcadia. Ukraine's airspace is closed to civil aviation, so arrivals come overland: train from Kyiv or Lviv, bus or marshrutka from Chișinău in Moldova, or long-distance coach from Poland and other neighbours. Two nights covers the walkable core; three lets you add a beach day or a day trip.

Getting around

The old town grid is compact and partly pedestrianised, so walk it. Trams, trolleybuses and marshrutkas cover the rest; pay the conductor on board or the driver on exit. Tram 5 links the bus station area to Arcadia and the beaches; trams 3 and 12 run along Preobrazhenska Street past Deribasivska and Cathedral Square. For taxis, local apps such as Uklon are usually cheaper and more reliable than global ones; Uber, Bolt and OnTaxi also operate.
