Costs by travel style
The three bands below are per person per day, with a shared room at mid-range and comfort. They exclude international flights, fjord cruises, Hurtigruten legs and Arctic tours, which sit on top of the sights line.
The gap between bands is mostly bed and food. Moving from a hostel dorm to a hotel room roughly doubles the day; adding restaurant dinners and a fjord hotel doubles it again.

What things cost
Norway is the most expensive Nordic country after Iceland, and the pain is concentrated in alcohol, restaurant meals and taxis. Supermarkets, bakeries and self-catering bring a day down fast: a hostel kitchen and a grocery run can hold food near NOK 300.

How to pay
The currency is the Norwegian krone (NOK, kr); Norway does not use the euro. Cards and phone payments work almost everywhere, including ferries, museums and small kiosks, and some places no longer take cash at all. Carry a card rather than a stack of notes.
The local payment app Vipps needs a Norwegian bank account, so visitors use cards instead. Interrail and Eurail passes are valid on Norwegian trains, but long-distance routes need a seat reservation, which is a small extra cost.

Cutting the cost
Book long-distance trains early: Minipris fares on Oslo–Bergen and other routes are far below the walk-up price, and they are the single biggest saving available to a visitor. Hostels with kitchens, campsites and cabins, and supermarket or bakery meals do the rest.
Travel in the low and shoulder seasons rather than July, when beds and ferries are at their peak. If you are heading north, treat Tromsø or Lofoten as a separate flight rather than a long drive, and price the flight before you commit to the route.
