7 days in Norway: itinerary

Seven days is enough for one half of Norway done properly. The country is long and thin: Oslo to Bergen is a full day by rail, Oslo to Tromsø is a flight of about two hours but a different trip entirely. Trying to bolt the Arctic onto a fjord week means spending two of your seven days in transit.

The route below is the one the country facts recommend for a first trip: two nights in Oslo, the Bergen Line over the mountains to Flåm, two nights on the Nærøyfjord, then the fjord boat or bus to Bergen for three nights, flying home from Bergen. Two hotel changes in seven days, no wasted days.

If you want auroras or midnight sun instead, skip the fjords and fly Oslo–Tromsø, staying 4–5 nights with day trips. That is a different 7-day trip, not an addition to this one.

The line runs east to west across southern Norway: capital, mountain railway, inner fjord, coastal city. Every leg is a scheduled train, boat or bus, so you can book the whole thing without a car.

Distances are short on the map but slow on the ground. The Bergen Line alone is around 7 hours Oslo–Bergen, and the Flåm branch adds an hour from Myrdal.

Each day below assumes you are travelling May–September, when the fjord boats and mountain roads run. Outside that window, check the Flåm Railway and fjord cruise timetables before booking anything.

Norway's long-distance network is trains on the Oslo–Bergen–Trondheim triangle, buses where the rails stop, and ferries and express boats along the coast. All of it is bookable online, and rail tickets get much cheaper the earlier you buy.

A car only pays off if you want to stop at viewpoints between towns. On this route it is a cost and a hassle: parking in Bergen is expensive and the fjord legs are better by boat. If you do drive, add tolls and ferry fares to your budget.

Flying is for the north. Oslo–Tromsø, Bergen–Tromsø and Bodø–Lofoten are short hops; the road equivalent takes days.

Three bases cover the week: Oslo, Flåm and Bergen. Book Bergen first, since summer weekends fill up, then work backwards.

In Oslo, stay near Sentralstasjon or in Grünerløkka for food and bars. In Flåm the choice is small: a handful of hotels and guesthouses by the harbour, so book early. In Bergen, Bryggen and the harbour front put everything within walking distance; the area around the station is cheaper and 10 minutes' walk from the fish market.

Norway is expensive by any standard. The figures below are per person for a mid-range trip, 2026 estimates, excluding international flights. A rough total is NOK 12,000–20,000 (about USD 1,100–1,900) for the week.

You can cut this with hostel dorms, supermarket meals and a rail pass, or push it up with fjord-view hotels and restaurant dinners. Alcohol and taxis are the fastest ways to blow the budget.

If you have more time, 10 days adds the Arctic: Oslo, Flåm, Bergen, then a flight to Tromsø for four nights. Fourteen days adds Ålesund, Geiranger and Lofoten on top of that.

If you want a different 7 days, swap the fjords for the north: fly Oslo–Tromsø, stay 4–5 nights, and use the remaining days for whale safaris, the Fjellheisen cable car and aurora chasing in season. Or base yourself in Bergen for the week and take day trips to Hardanger, the Nærøyfjord and the islands, which cuts hotel changes to zero.

A third option is Stavanger: Preikestolen, Lysefjord and the wooden old town, with flights home from Stavanger.
