Northwest Tanzania is the Lake Victoria and Lake Tanganyika side of the country: Mwanza as the working base, Bukoba and the Kagera hills to the west, Kigoma and the Mahale Mountains down the Tanganyika shore. It is not the safari circuit — most visitors come for lake towns, chimps at Mahale and Rubondo Island, and it rewards slower travel. Mwanza has the region's main airport (MWZ) and links onward to the Serengeti; Kigoma has the train from Dar es Salaam and Dodoma. Give it 3–5 days minimum; a 2-night add-on from the northern circuit is rushed.

Lake Victoria shore (Mwanza, Bukoba): Two wet seasons: long rains roughly March–May, short rains November–December. Drier, cooler months June–September are the easiest for lake trips.
