Northern Uganda is the country's emptiest quarter: Kidepo Valley savanna, Murchison Falls' northern bank, and Gulu as the only town with a traveller's infrastructure. Distances are long and roads rough, so it rewards people with time and a 4WD, not a first-week itinerary.

- Driest and easiest October to March — check current conditions before Kidepo, whose access tracks are the first to suffer in rain.
The north is hotter and drier than the south; December–February is the most comfortable window.
