The Northern Province is Sri Lanka's Tamil country: Hindu temples, a distinct cuisine and quiet beaches, reached by an 8-hour train from Colombo or a short flight from India. It is not a beach-resort region and it is not on the classic first-trip loop. Go if you want the temples, the food and the space, and give it 2–3 nights with Jaffna as your base.

- Island ferries can be overcrowded with poor safety standards; a private boat sank near Delft in 2025. Locals get priority at weekends and holidays.
- There are no good surf breaks in the province; surfers should go to Arugam Bay instead.
- The north is a separate trip from the classic Colombo–hill country–south coast loop; adding it to an 8–12 night first trip means cutting something else.

The north runs opposite to the south coast: when the south is wet in June and July, the north and east are usually dry.
