Northeast Tanzania is the country's arrival zone: Kilimanjaro airport (JRO), Arusha, Moshi, the Ngorongoro and Serengeti gates, and the green Usambara Mountains on the road toward Tanga and Dar es Salaam. Most travellers pass through in a night. Two or three nights here — a crater day, a mountain view, a Lushoto walk — is what makes the transit worth it.

Arusha, Moshi, Karatu: Long rains March–May; short rains in November. Days are mild year-round, nights cool.
Usambara Mountains (Lushoto): Wettest March–May; mist and mud on trails. Cool enough for a jacket most evenings.
Tanga coast: Hot and humid most of the year; the long rains bring heavy afternoon downpours.

June to October is the reliable dry window for the crater, Kilimanjaro views and Usambara walking; January–February is a shorter dry spell with more heat.
