Northeast China (Dongbei) is three provinces — Liaoning, Jilin, Heilongjiang — linked by high-speed rail and a shared cuisine of dumplings, stews and pickled cabbage. Harbin draws winter crowds for its ice festival; Shenyang holds a UNESCO imperial palace and tombs; Dalian offers a coastal break with Russian-era architecture. It is less touristed than Beijing or Shanghai, and winter is genuinely cold — plan around that.
