North West is South Africa's mining and cattle province, wrapped around the Magaliesberg range. Most visitors come for one of two things: a malaria-free Big Five safari at Pilanesberg, or a resort weekend at Sun City. Everything else — Rustenburg, Klerksdorp, Potchefstroom, Mahikeng — is a working city, useful as a stopover on the N4 or N12 rather than a destination in itself. Two nights is enough for the safari; three if you add Hartebeespoort.
