The North Country is New York's northern border strip: the St. Lawrence River and its Thousand Islands on the west, Lake Champlain and the Montreal corridor on the east, and a lot of two-lane road between. It is a driving region. Pick one base — Plattsburgh for the lake and Montreal, Watertown for the river and Fort Drum country — and treat Clayton, Sackets Harbor, Ogdensburg, Potsdam, Canton and Malone as day loops. Two nights is a pass-through; four nights lets you do both the river and the lake without repacking.
