North Central Province is Sri Lanka's largest province and holds two of the island's ancient capitals: Anuradhapura (kingdom 437 BCE–1017 CE) and Polonnaruwa (1070–1232 CE). Most travellers sleep in Anuradhapura for the ruins and the sacred sites, or in Habarana as a junction for the elephant parks — note that Sigiriya itself sits in Central Province, about an hour from Habarana, so treat it as a cross-province trip. Two nights covers one ancient city properly; three nights lets you do both plus a park. Ruins are hot and shadeless by mid-morning, so start at opening and finish before lunch.
