  • Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
  • Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
  • Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
  • Australia ↗Almost every visitor needs a visa or an electronic authorisation (ETA or eVisitor, depending on passport) before boarding: apply only through the official Department of Home Affairs site or the official AustralianETA app, and check the rules for your passport.
  • Australia ↗Declare all food, plant material, seeds, wood and animal products on your arrival declaration; undeclared items can bring on-the-spot fines or visa cancellation. When unsure, declare it.
  • Australia ↗Drive on the left. An overseas licence in English (or with an official translation or International Driving Permit) is accepted for visitors; check the state rules and your rental contract.
  • Australia ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches; rip currents cause most beach drownings.
  • Queensland ↗Marine stinger season runs November to May in tropical waters; swim inside stinger nets or in a protective suit.
  • Queensland ↗Queensland keeps UTC+10 all year — no daylight saving. Clocks go back an hour crossing from New South Wales in summer.
  • South East Queensland ↗Translink runs all trains, buses, ferries and trams in the region; a flat 50-cent fare applies per journey with up to 3 transfers (2026 estimate).
  • South East Queensland ↗Airtrain to or from Brisbane Airport is the exception to the flat fare and costs about A$22 (2026 estimate); book online for a discount.
  • South East Queensland ↗Swim between the red and yellow flags on patrolled beaches only; rips are the main risk, and stinger enclosures are used on some beaches in the warmer months.

Noosa is a small coastal pocket at the north end of the Sunshine Coast: a sheltered main beach, a low-rise resort strip on Hastings Street, a calmer riverfront at Noosaville, and a national park headland you can walk to from the sand. It is not a city break — the value is in the beach, the coastal walk and the river and hinterland day-trips. Sleep here, keep the car or the bus for the rest.

School holidays (Dec–Jan, and Queensland term breaks) and the Easter and September breaks are the bed-price peaks; book Hastings Street months ahead for those weeks.
