Nokia is a small industrial town on the Nokianvirta river, 15 km west of Tampere, and it is not the company: the telecoms group left long ago and only a staff mansion remains. What is here is the old pulp and rubber works on Tehtaansaari island, a C. L. Engel church, riverside trails and Finland's biggest spa complex. Most travellers see it as a half-day from Tampere, not a place to sleep.

Getting around

Nysse buses link Nokia centre with Tampere centre roughly every 30 min; trains take about 15 min but run only a few times a day. Inside Nokia the centre is walkable; buses thin out away from it. Tier e-scooters operate in the centre when conditions allow. Taxis via app (Valopilkku, 02 Taksi) or Menevä/iTaksi as in Tampere.

Watch out

Safety

Very safe by any big-city standard; the real risks are ice in winter, dark unlit riverside paths and thin late-night bus service back to Tampere.
  • Nokia the company has no offices here: do not come expecting a museum or visitor centre.
  • Bus service outside the centre is limited; check the last return to Tampere before an evening out.
  • Winter pavements and e-scooters do not mix; ice is common Dec–Mar.
  • Spa day passes and hotel prices spike in Finnish school holidays; check before you go.
