Cantonment, New Delhi: neighborhood guide

Delhi Cantonment — Delhi Cantt — is a military enclave in the west of New Delhi, spread over low-rise blocks, parade grounds, officers' quarters and wide, tree-lined roads. It is not a sightseeing district. The streets are quiet, traffic is lighter than in the centre, and the pace is residential and institutional rather than touristy.

The area's main draw is its museums. The Indian Air Force Museum at Palam, Subroto Park, is the oldest museum of its kind in India, with aircraft, photographs, weapons, uniforms and memorabilia. The Rajputana Rifles Regimental Museum at the Rajputana Rifles Centre covers the regiment's history through weapons, uniforms, large-format images and film.

For shopping there is Gopinath Bazar, a local market for everyday goods rather than souvenirs. Beyond that, Cantonment is a place to sleep and pass through, not a place to spend a day.

Stay here if your trip is built around the airport: a late arrival, an early departure, or a long layover. The area sits close to Indira Gandhi International Airport and is served by the metro and the Airport Express, so you can reach the terminals without crossing the whole city.

Stay here too if you want a quiet, low-rise base and are happy to use the metro for everything else. Rates are often lower than in Central or South Delhi for the same standard of room.

Do not stay here if this is your first visit and you want to walk to sights, eat well after dark or be near Connaught Place, Old Delhi or Hauz Khas. Cantonment has no tourist core, few restaurants aimed at visitors and little to do in the evening. For those trips, base yourself in Central or South Delhi and treat Cantonment as a transfer point.

Cantonment is a residential and institutional district, so eating is everyday rather than destination dining: small local restaurants, dhabas and sweet shops around Gopinath Bazar and the residential markets, plus hotel restaurants. Expect North Indian staples — dal, roti, tandoori dishes, chole bhature — rather than a restaurant strip.

For a proper Delhi food evening, ride the metro to Central or South Delhi: Connaught Place, Karol Bagh and Hauz Khas all have far more choice and stay open later. If you are here only for an airport night, eat at your hotel or in the terminal rather than hunting for a kitchen after 22:00.

Delhi Metro is the practical way in and out: Delhi Cantonment and Dhaula Kuan are the useful stations for this district (check), and Dhaula Kuan also connects to the Airport Express line toward New Delhi station and IGI (check). From the airport, the road drive is roughly 15–25 minutes outside peak hours (check); in morning or evening traffic allow considerably more.

Inside the district, distances between the museums, Gopinath Bazar and the residential blocks are too long to walk comfortably in the heat, so plan on metro plus a short auto-rickshaw or taxi hop. Use app-based cabs or prepaid autos and agree the fare or meter before you set off. Parts of the area are military land with restricted access, so follow signage and do not photograph installations.
