Netherlands in May: what to expect

May is the month the Netherlands turns green. Daytime highs sit around 17–19 °C on the coast and in the Randstad, a degree or two warmer inland and in Limburg, with nights around 8–10 °C. The wind off the North Sea still bites on the beach, so a coastal day can feel several degrees cooler than the same day in Utrecht.

Rain comes as showers rather than set-in drizzle: expect roughly 9–11 days with measurable rain across the month, often a sharp burst followed by sun. Sunshine climbs through the month to about 7 hours a day on average by late May, and daylight stretches to 15–16 hours — it stays light until around 21:30, which is why evening canal walks and terrace dinners work so well.

The north and the Wadden islands run cooler and windier than the rest of the country, and island ferries and seal trips are more comfortable from June onwards.

May is high season in everything but name. Amsterdam hotel rates sit close to summer levels, and the cheapest beds near the centre go first for weekends and the spring long weekends. Book two to three months ahead for a city-centre room, or stay in Haarlem, Utrecht, Leiden or Delft and train in — the trains are frequent enough that one bed covers several bases.

The crowds are concentrated rather than everywhere. Amsterdam, Keukenhof and the tulip fields around Lisse are the pinch points; Rotterdam, Groningen, Maastricht and the eastern towns stay comfortable. Museums with timed entry, including the Anne Frank House and the Van Gogh Museum, need slots booked days or weeks ahead.

Two things push prices up in May: the tail of the tulip season in the first half of the month, and the Dutch spring long weekends. Ascension and Whit Monday fall in May in some years — 6 and 17 May in 2027 — and coasts and campsites fill for those.

Base yourself in Amsterdam for the first visit, then add a second base. Utrecht, Haarlem and Delft are all short train rides away and cheaper to sleep in, and Leiden puts you close to the bulb fields without the Lisse crowds.

For flowers, go early in the month: Keukenhof and the fields around Lisse, with Leiden as a quieter base. For cities, Rotterdam and The Hague pair well with the coast at Scheveningen, and Groningen is the pick if you want the north without the Wadden ferry timetables.

May is also the first good cycling month. The dunes between Haarlem and Zandvoort, the Vecht valley around Utrecht and the flat lanes of the north are all comfortable at this temperature, and the long evenings mean you can ride after dinner.

Pack for two seasons in one day. A light waterproof shell with a hood is the single most useful item; umbrellas turn inside out in the wind off the sea. Layers — T-shirt, light jumper, thin jacket — handle a 10 °C swing between morning and afternoon.

Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else: cobbles, bike lanes and museum floors add up. Bring sunglasses and sunscreen for the long evenings, a small day bag, and a refillable bottle. If you plan to cycle, pack or rent a rain cover for your bag.

For the 4 May silence and any church or memorial visit, a smart-casual layer is useful. Restaurants and bars are casual almost everywhere.

April is the peak tulip month and includes King's Day on the 27th, with similar crowds and prices but colder, less reliable weather. June brings the longest days, warmer evenings and the best cycling conditions of the year, at the same high-season prices.

March is quieter and cheaper, with Keukenhof opening around the third week and early bulbs in the fields. If your priority is flowers with fewer people, late March and early April beat May; if it is warm terraces and long light, June wins.
