Nepal has one airport that does the heavy lifting. Tribhuvan International (KTM) handles the long-haul arrivals from the Gulf, East Asia and Europe, plus the domestic network that feeds Pokhara, Chitwan, Lumbini and the mountain strips. If you are building a normal first trip — Kathmandu base, valley day-trips, maybe Pokhara — book into KTM and treat everything else as a domestic leg.
Pokhara International (PKR) and Gautam Buddha at Bhairahawa (BWA) are newer international airports with a thin schedule of foreign flights, mostly regional. They are useful only if your itinerary is anchored in those areas and you can find a connection that works; otherwise you will still route through Kathmandu. Check current schedules before you commit, because services change by season.
On arrival at KTM, immigration and baggage can take 30–60 minutes at peak times. There is a fixed-price taxi counter outside arrivals; agree the fare before you get in, because metered taxis are rare in Kathmandu. Ride-hailing apps (Pathao, InDrive) work in the city and often beat the airport taxi price, but pickup points at the terminal can be awkward with luggage.
For onward travel, domestic flights leave from the same Kathmandu airport. Foreigners pay dollar fares on the main tourist routes: Kathmandu–Pokhara is about 25 minutes in the air and US$110–140 one way, and it saves a full day versus the 7–9 hour tourist bus. Morning departures are far more reliable; afternoon cloud and wind cancel mountain flights, so keep buffer days if a flight is on your critical path.
The Lukla flight, the gateway to the Everest trek, is its own case. It is about 35 minutes in the air and roughly US$220–240 one way (check). In peak trekking months many flights leave from Manthali (Ramechhap), a 4–5 hour road transfer from Kathmandu, so confirm your departure airport the day before. Weather delays of a day or more are normal.

Tips
Book the international leg into KTM and the domestic leg separately if you are price-sensitive; through-tickets are convenient but rarely cheaper, and a missed connection on separate tickets is your problem.
Keep at least one buffer day before any domestic flight that matters — a trek start, a permit appointment, a festival. Cloud, strikes (bandh) and roadworks all move schedules at short notice.
Carry some Nepali rupees on arrival for the taxi and a SIM card. ATMs at KTM exist but queues build when several flights land together.
Saturday is the weekly holiday, so plan errands and permit offices around it. Check the festival calendar before locking flights, since Dashain and Tihar fill domestic seats weeks ahead.
