Narlıkuyu

Base here 1–2 nights for the Cennet-Cehennem chasms and Kızkalesi castle; skip it if you want a resort town or nightlife.

Narlıkuyu is a small coastal village on the D400 between Silifke and Mersin, known for the Heaven and Hell sinkholes and a Roman mosaic museum. Kızkalesi, 5 km east, adds an island castle and more beds. One full day covers the chasms and the castle; two nights suit a slow beach stop on a drive along the Cilician coast.

Get around

Dolmuş minibuses run along the D400 between Silifke, Narlıkuyu, Kızkalesi and Erdemli; flag them down at the highway. The chasms are 2–3 km off the D400, so you walk up Atatürk Cd or take a taxi. A car makes the ruins and beaches much easier.

Etiquette

  • Greeting: Handshake; 'Merhaba' (hello) or 'Selamün aleyküm' in conservative areas; cheek kisses between friends of the same sex; avoid: Offering a hand to a conservative woman first — wait for hers
  • Mosques: Covered clothing, headscarf for women, shoes in hand, quiet voice; avoid: Walking in front of people praying; visiting during Friday midday prayer
  • Hospitality: Accept tea or at least a sip; bring sweets or pastries to a home; avoid: Refusing food repeatedly; showing the soles of your feet

Scams and watch-outs

  • Beaches are stony and sea urchins are common: wear beach shoes.
  • The chasm site involves 300 steps down and back up; the lift may not be working.
  • Inter-city buses do not stop here by default: ask the driver, or change at Silifke or Mersin.
  • Some restaurants and hotels close outside the May–October season.

Quiet and low-crime; the real risks are the sea (urchins, stony entry), summer heat on the chasm steps and unlit roads at night. Use 112 for anything urgent.
