Naples for solo travellers: safety and tips

Naples rewards a solo traveller who plans the day around one area at a time. The Historic Centre is compact and flat, so you can walk from the Duomo to the archaeological museum, stop for a €5–8 margherita and be back at your room before dark without a single taxi.

Book a room in Chiaia or the Historic Centre for the first nights, then move to Vomero if you want quieter evenings and hill air. The metro Line 1 links the station, the centre and Vomero, and the funiculars climb to Vomero and Chiaia, which cuts out late-night walks through empty streets.

For day trips, Pompeii, Herculaneum and Capri are all reachable by train or ferry without a car, which is the main reason Naples suits solo travel: the logistics are short and cheap.

Use the Historic Centre as your anchor: the Decumano Maggiore and the streets around Via Toledo hold most of the food, churches and shops a solo traveller wants in one walkable block. Chiaia sits south-west along the seafront, and Vomero sits on the hill above, reached by metro or funicular.

The two stations matter for planning: Napoli Centrale and Piazza Garibaldi for trains to Pompeii, Herculaneum, Rome and the airport bus, and Molo Beverello at the port for ferries to Capri, Ischia and Sorrento. Both are busy and both are where you should keep your bag in front of you.

Naples is a working city, not a resort, and the street attention you get as a solo traveller is mostly harmless: comments, offers of help, someone pointing you to their cousin's restaurant. A short "no, grazie" and continuing to walk ends almost all of it. If someone follows you, step into a bar or shop rather than arguing on the pavement.

Keep the phone in a zipped pocket on crowded buses and around the station, and wear your bag across your body on the side away from the road — scooter theft is the local speciality. At night, stick to Via Toledo, Chiaia and the lit parts of the centre; the area around the station is the one to cross quickly after dark.

Eat where you see locals standing: pizza a portafoglio, fried food in paper, a plate of pasta at the counter. Solo diners are normal, and a table for one at 8pm is easier to get than a table for four. Carry some cash for small places, and expect the coperto (cover charge) on the bill.

For the sea and the islands, check ferry times the day before and buy the return leg at the same time — afternoon sailings fill in summer. For the ruins, go early: Pompeii and Herculaneum are far calmer before 10am and the Circumvesuviana trains are less crowded.
