Where to stay in Naples: best neighborhoods and hotels

If this is your first trip to Naples, sleep in the historic centre. You can walk to the Duomo, the Cappella Sansevero, the archaeological museum and dozens of pizzerias, and the streets stay busy enough to feel safe at night. The trade-off is noise: scooters, church bells and late bars.

If you want calm, sea air and a wider choice of restaurants, pick Chiaia or the Lungomare. If you want a hilltop view and easy metro and funicular links, pick Vomero. Stay near Napoli Centrale only if you have an early train to Pompeii, Herculaneum or the Amalfi Coast, or a very early flight.

Historic centre. The grid of the Decumani is the old Greek and Roman street plan, and most of what you came for sits inside it: the Duomo, San Severo, Santa Chiara, the Naples National Archaeological Museum a short walk north, and the pizza places on Via dei Tribunali and Via Toledo's side streets. Streets are narrow and often pedestrian-only, so a taxi may drop you a few minutes away. Ask about noise and whether the building has a lift — many walk-ups have several flights.

Chiaia and the Lungomare. South of the centre along the bay, this is where locals shop and eat, with the seafront promenade, Castel dell'Ovo and the ferry port for Capri and the islands within reach. It is calmer and greener, but you will use the metro (Line 1 or 2) or walk 20–30 minutes to the historic sights.

Vomero. Up the hill, Vomero has a lived-in feel, good food streets and the Certosa di San Martino and Castel Sant'Elmo with the best city views. Metro Line 1 and the funiculars connect it to the centre and the seafront. It suits families and anyone who wants a quieter base without leaving the city.

Napoli Centrale and Piazza Garibaldi. The transport hub: high-speed trains, Circumvesuviana trains to Pompeii and Herculaneum, and the Alibus to the airport. Handy for one-night stops and early starts, but it is a busy station district rather than a sightseeing base. Choose a hotel on the western side toward Corso Umberto if you stay here.

Posillipo and Mergellina. Residential, hilly and waterfront, with ferries from Mergellina and views back over the bay. You will rely on buses and taxis; it is a good choice for a slower stay or a special-occasion hotel.

Budget hostels and guesthouses in the centre and near the station start around €35–70 per person in a dorm or small double; mid-range three-star doubles run about €90–160; four-star and boutique rooms in Chiaia or on the seafront run €180–350 and up in high season. Expect a city tourist tax added per person per night, tiered by hotel category, and often payable in cash at check-in. Breakfast is sometimes included in mid-range and above; in the centre it is often easier and cheaper to eat at a bar standing up.

Book 2–3 months ahead for May–June and September–October, the strongest months. August is hot and many family-run places close, while prices near the station can spike when there is a big event at the stadium or a cruise-ship turnaround.

Confirm three things before booking: air conditioning, a lift, and how far the nearest metro or funicular stop is. Naples summers are hot and many historic buildings have no lift.

Use the metro and funiculars rather than driving. The centre has restricted traffic zones and parking is scarce and expensive.
