Naples in October: what to expect

October in Naples is the transition from late summer to autumn. The first half is usually warm and bright, with highs near 23 °C and evenings around 15 °C. By the last week, rain becomes more frequent and the sea cools noticeably.

Rain typically arrives in short, heavy bursts rather than all-day drizzle, so a morning downpour often clears by lunch. Humidity drops compared with August, which makes walking the historic centre far more comfortable.

The sea stays around 22 °C at the start of the month — warm enough for a swim at Gaiola or the Posillipo lidos — but drops through the second half. Coastal ferries to Capri, Ischia and the Amalfi Coast still run on a full or near-full timetable.

October sits between the September peak and the quiet winter. The historic centre, the Naples National Archaeological Museum and the Cappella Sansevero are busy but manageable — queues are shorter than in July or August, and you can usually walk into most churches without waiting.

Hotel rates fall to mid-season levels. A double room in the historic centre or Chiaia that costs peak rates in August is noticeably cheaper in October, especially in the second half of the month. Restaurants and pizzerias stay open; the seasonal closures that hit coastal resorts in November have not started yet.

Weekends around the 4 October holiday and any Italian school breaks can still fill up. If you want the quietest window, aim for mid-week in the second or third week.

Naples keeps a busy cultural calendar in October. The city's theatre and music season restarts, and the Museo e Real Bosco di Capodimonte and MANN run their autumn exhibition programmes.

The most visible date is 4 October, St Francis of Assisi, which becomes a national holiday from 2026 (check). Offices close and some smaller shops shut, but most museums and major sights stay open. Expect extra crowds in Assisi rather than Naples itself.

Religious and neighbourhood festivals continue across the city and the surrounding Campania towns; dates vary each year, so check locally before you plan around one.

October is a strong month for the classic Naples sights. The historic centre — Spaccanapoli, the Duomo and the Cappella Sansevero — is comfortable to walk without summer heat. The Naples National Archaeological Museum and Capodimonte are good rainy-day options.

For views, take the funicular up to Castel Sant'Elmo or walk the Posillipo seafront. Day trips to Pompeii and Herculaneum are cooler and less crowded than in summer, and the Circumvesuviana trains run frequently.

The islands and the Amalfi Coast are still reachable by ferry in October, though services thin out towards the end of the month. Capri, Ischia and Sorrento make easy day trips; check the last ferry times before you commit.

Pack for two seasons in one month. Light layers, a couple of short-sleeve shirts and a warm mid-layer cover the warm first half and the cooler evenings. A compact rain jacket or umbrella is worth carrying from mid-month onwards.

Comfortable walking shoes matter — Naples' streets are uneven and often steep. Bring a swimsuit if you plan to swim early in the month, and a light scarf for churches.

September is warmer and busier, with the sea at its best. November is quieter and cheaper but wetter, and many coastal hotels and ferries close. August is hot, crowded and expensive; December brings Christmas cribs (presepi) and mild, damp weather.
