Naples in December: what to expect

Naples sits in the mild south of Italy, so December is cool and damp rather than cold. Daytime highs usually land near 15 °C, nights near 8 °C, and the sea stays around 16 °C — too cold for most swimmers. Rain arrives in spells rather than all day: expect roughly 11–13 wet days across the month, often a heavy morning followed by a dry afternoon.

Daylight runs to about 9.5 hours, with sunset before 17:00, so plan outdoor sights for the morning and keep museums, churches and covered markets for the afternoon. Wind off the bay makes the waterfront feel colder than the number suggests; a waterproof shell beats an umbrella in the gusts.

December is low season in Naples. Hotel rates drop well below spring and summer levels, and you can usually walk into the Archaeological Museum, the Capodimonte or a pizzeria without a queue. The exceptions are the long weekend around 8 December and the stretch from about 24 December to 2 January, when Italians travel, family visits fill the city and prices tick back up.

Book the holiday week early and expect some restaurants to close on 25 and 26 December. Outside those dates, this is one of the cheapest months to see the city, and the low demand makes it a good time for a short city break rather than a beach trip.

The month opens with the Immaculate Conception on 8 December, a national holiday that officially starts the Christmas season and the Italian ski season; it makes a long weekend when it falls near one. Christmas and St Stephen's Day (25–26 December) close most shops, museums and many restaurants. New Year's Eve brings fireworks over the bay and a large, free outdoor concert tradition in the city centre — details change each year, so check locally.

Naples is best known in December for its presepi: the hand-built Christmas crib scenes sold and displayed along Via San Gregorio Armeno, where workshops stay busy through the season. Churches across the historic centre hold their own displays. Dates and opening hours vary, so confirm before you go.

December favours indoor and compact sights. The Museo Archeologico Nazionale and the Capodimonte gallery fill a wet morning; the Duomo, Santa Chiara and the Cappella Sansevero sit close together in the historic centre, so you can move between them in short dry spells. The Naples underground tours and the catacombs are also rain-proof.

On clear days, walk the Lungomare and take the funicular up to Castel Sant'Elmo or Posillipo for the bay view, then eat pizza in the centre. Pompeii and Herculaneum stay open year-round and are quieter and cooler than in summer, though you will want waterproof shoes. Capri, Ischia and the Amalfi Coast are the weak point: many hotels, beach clubs and seasonal ferries shut from November to March, so treat any island day as weather- and timetable-dependent.

Pack for cool, wet weather and a lot of walking on uneven stone: a waterproof jacket with a hood, a warm mid-layer, jeans or trousers, and shoes with grip that can take rain. An umbrella is useful in the centre but awkward in the wind off the bay. Add a small daypack for museum days and a scarf or hat for evenings, when it drops to around 8 °C.

Bring a power adapter for Italy's Type L sockets and a portable charger, since dark afternoons mean more time indoors. If you plan to visit churches, carry something that covers shoulders and knees.

November is wetter and quieter still, with many coastal businesses already closed. January stays cool and quiet, with winter sales starting early in the month and the same low-season prices. February brings a slow lift in crowds and the first hints of spring, while October is the better bet if you want mild weather and the coast still partly open.
