NapaNapa, California

Base in downtown Napa for 2 nights, walk to dinner, and book one wine day by car or tour: the city is the valley's service town, not a wine estate.

Napa is a small city at the southern mouth of Napa Valley, about 80 km north of San Francisco. Downtown holds the restaurants, the riverfront and the Wine Train; the wineries sit north along Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail. Two nights covers downtown plus one tasting day, and a car or a booked tour is what makes the valley work.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Downtown Napa is walkable, but wineries are 10–30 km north on Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail, with no useful bus between estates. Drive (one sober driver), book a chauffeured tour, or use the VINE bus for town-to-town hops. Tasting-room pours make self-driving risky: decide the driver before the first stop.

Chain hotels and resorts 5–10 min by car from downtown; free parking and lower rates, but you drive to eat.

Silverado Trail and east side

Resorts and golf on the valley's quieter side; car required for everything.

Watch out

Safety

Napa is a low-crime small city; the real risks are drink-driving after tastings, summer heat on trails, and strict no-refund booking policies.
  • Tasting fees are often US$40–75 per person and many rooms refund part of it only if you buy bottles: ask before you sit.
  • Most wineries need a reservation, especially weekends and harvest (Sep–Oct).
  • Driving after tasting is a DUI risk; California's limit is 0.08%.
  • Summer afternoons inland regularly pass 32°C (90°F); the coast fog does not reach Napa.
  • B&B and resort cancellation policies are strict, often 50–100% non-refundable at booking.
