How to get to Namibia: airports, flights and border crossings

Entry rules changed in April 2025: most Western passports now need a visa, either an e-visa pre-approval applied for online before travel or a visa on arrival at N$1,600. Confirm your own passport against the visa page before booking flights.

Fares peak in the June–October dry season and around Christmas, when lodges and rental cars sell out months ahead. Shoulder months (April–May, November) usually price lower.

Step 1 — pick your airport. Hosea Kutako International (WDH) is the only airport with long-haul flights and the natural start of a Windhoek-based loop. Walvis Bay (WVB) takes some regional flights from South Africa and can save a day if your trip is coast-focused, but schedules are limited — check before planning around it.

Step 2 — choose a routing. From North America and Europe, almost every itinerary connects through Johannesburg (JNB) or Cape Town (CPT) with Airlink or South African Airways, or through Addis Ababa (Ethiopian), Doha (Qatar Airways) or Frankfurt (Eurowings Discover / Condor — check which carriers are flying in 2026). From Australia and New Zealand, expect two stops, usually via Johannesburg or Doha.

Step 3 — book the ground transfer. WDH sits about 45 km east of Windhoek. Most travellers take a pre-booked shuttle, a taxi or pick up a rental car at the airport. If you land in the evening, sleep in Windhoek rather than driving onward in the dark.

Step 4 — sort the visa before you fly. Apply for the e-visa pre-approval online, or budget N$1,600 for the visa on arrival. Carry a printed copy of the approval and your return ticket.

Step 5 — plan the loop. Most trips run Windhoek → Sossusvlei → Swakopmund → Damaraland → Etosha → back to Windhoek over 10–14 nights.

Namibia has no useful sea arrival for travellers — no scheduled passenger ferries. Cruise ships call at Walvis Bay and Lüderitz, but you arrive as a cruise passenger, not as an independent traveller.

Land entry is common from South Africa (via Noordoewer/Vioolsdrift or Ariamsvlei), Botswana (Buitepos, Trans-Kalahari), Zambia (Katima Mulilo) and Zimbabwe. Borders generally open early and close in the evening; do not arrive after dark. Third-party insurance and a road tax may be charged at the border for foreign-registered vehicles — check current amounts.

Driving in Namibia is on the left. Outside the main B-roads most routes are gravel, and you should not drive after dark because of animals on the road.

If you are connecting through Johannesburg, allow at least three hours between flights; the international-to-regional transfer is not always quick.
