Visa

Namibia changed its entry rules in April 2025. Most travellers from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the EU now need a visa where they previously entered visa-free. You can apply for e-visa pre-approval online before departure, or pay N$1,600 on arrival (2026 estimate). Confirm the current list and fee on the official Namibian immigration site before booking flights, because rules and fees have shifted more than once.

Money

The Namibian dollar is pegged one-to-one to the South African rand, and rand notes circulate freely. Cards work in Windhoek, Swakopmund and most lodges, but fuel stations, small shops and rural stops often want cash. Draw rand or NAD in town before long drives. Tipping runs about 10% in restaurants, N$5–10 to fuel attendants, and N$100–200 per guest per day for guides.

Safety

Namibia is generally a low-risk destination for violent crime, but petty theft happens in Windhoek and at busy viewpoints. The bigger practical risk is the road: gravel, wildlife and long empty stretches. Drive in daylight, keep the tank above half, and carry water. Check the current advisory for your own government before you go.

Getting around

Self-drive is the standard way to see Namibia. A 2WD handles the main B-roads and Sossusvlei in dry weather; a 4WD is better for Damaraland, Kaokoland and the Zambezi region. Distances are long: Windhoek to Sossusvlei is about 5 hours, Windhoek to Etosha about 5–6 hours. Never drive after dark — livestock and kudu on the road are a real hazard. Domestic flights link Windhoek, Swakopmund and a few lodges.

Food

Namibian food leans on beef, game, seafood from the coast and German-influenced baking. Windhoek and Swakopmund have the widest choice; outside the towns, lodges usually serve set meals. Tap water is treated and generally considered safe in towns, but many travellers drink bottled or filtered water in rural areas. Vegetarian options exist but are thinner outside the cities.

Weather

The dry season runs roughly May to October: clear days, cold nights, best for Etosha and the dunes. November to April is the rainy season in the north and centre — hot, greener, with afternoon storms and some roads turning to mud. The coast around Swakopmund is cool and foggy year-round, so pack a layer even in summer.

Health

Malaria risk is low in most of the country but present in the north — Kavango, Zambezi and parts of Etosha — so check with a travel clinic about prophylaxis. Altitude is not an issue. The main health concerns are sun, dehydration and distance from care: carry oral rehydration salts, sunscreen and any prescription medicine, and know that the nearest hospital may be hours away.

Questions people ask

Do I need a visa for Namibia?

Since April 2025, most Western passport holders need a visa. Apply online for e-visa pre-approval before you fly, or pay N$1,600 on arrival (2026 estimate). Confirm the current list and fee on the official immigration site before booking.

What is the best time to visit Namibia?

April to October for Etosha wildlife and Sossusvlei dunes, with May to September best for the south and Fish River Canyon. November to April is hotter and wetter in the north, with greener scenery and afternoon storms.

How much money do I need for Namibia?

Budget roughly N$1,500–2,500 per person per day self-driving, excluding vehicle hire (2026 estimate). Lodges and guided safaris cost much more. Carry cash for fuel and rural stops; cards work in towns.

Is Namibia safe to visit?

Generally yes. Violent crime is uncommon; petty theft happens in Windhoek and at busy viewpoints. The bigger risk is the road — gravel, wildlife and long empty stretches. Drive in daylight and check your government's current advisory.

Can I drink the tap water in Namibia?

Tap water is treated and generally considered safe in towns. Many travellers drink bottled or filtered water in rural areas. Carry water on long drives regardless.

Do I need a 4WD in Namibia?

Not for the main loop. A 2WD handles the B-roads and Sossusvlei in dry weather. A 4WD is better for Damaraland, Kaokoland and the Zambezi region, especially in the rainy season.

How long should I spend in Namibia?

Ten to fourteen nights is the standard self-drive loop: two nights each at Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland and Etosha, plus a night in Windhoek at each end. Shorter trips mean cutting stops or flying between them.

Is it safe to drive at night in Namibia?

No. Livestock and wildlife on unlit roads make night driving the single biggest risk for visitors. Plan to reach your stop before sunset and never push on after dark.

What plugs and voltage does Namibia use?

Type M (large round three-pin) and Type D, 220–230 V at 50 Hz. Bring a universal adapter; lodges often have a mix of sockets.

What currency does Namibia use?

The Namibian dollar (NAD), pegged one-to-one to the South African rand. Rand notes circulate freely. About 17–18 NAD per US$ in 2026.

Do I need malaria tablets for Namibia?

Malaria risk is low in most of the country but present in the north — Kavango, Zambezi and parts of Etosha. Check with a travel clinic about prophylaxis before you go.

What is the time zone in Namibia?

Central Africa Time, UTC+2 all year. Namibia does not observe daylight saving.

How much do I tip in Namibia?

About 10% in restaurants, N$5–10 to fuel attendants, and N$100–200 per guest per day for guides. Tipping is appreciated but not compulsory.

Can I use my credit card in Namibia?

Cards work in Windhoek, Swakopmund and most lodges. Fuel stations, small shops and rural stops often want cash, so draw rand or NAD in town before long drives.

What should I pack for Namibia?

Layers for cold desert nights, sun protection, a hat, sturdy shoes, a torch, a first-aid kit and any prescription medicine. The coast is cool and foggy year-round, so pack a warm layer even in summer.

Is Namibia good for a first-time Africa trip?

Yes. English is the official language, roads are manageable, and the self-drive loop is well established. It suits travellers who want wildlife and desert scenery without a guided group.

Do I need travel insurance for Namibia?

Strongly recommended. Medical facilities are sparse outside Windhoek and Swakopmund, and evacuation cover matters given the distances. Check that your policy covers self-drive and any adventure activities.

What are Namibia's public holidays?

Namibia observes a set of national holidays including Independence Day in March and Heroes' Day in August. Shops and some lodges close, and parks get busier. Check the current list before you plan travel days.

Can I visit Etosha in the rainy season?

Yes, but wildlife spreads out and waterholes are less reliable. The dry months, June to October, concentrate animals at water points and are the better bet for a first safari.

How do I get from Windhoek to Sossusvlei?

Self-drive is standard: about 5 hours on tar and gravel via Solitaire or Sesriem. There are also shuttle and small-group tours. Aim to arrive before sunset and stay inside or near the gate for a sunrise dune visit.

Is Namibia expensive?

It is mid-range by African standards. Self-driving with campsites and guesthouses is affordable; fly-in lodges and guided safaris are not. Fuel, park fees and vehicle hire are the main fixed costs.

What language do people speak in Namibia?

English is the only official language. Oshiwambo, Afrikaans, Otjiherero, Damara/Nama and German are widely spoken, especially in the centre and south.

Can I bring drones or medication into Namibia?

Drone use is restricted and needs permission; medication rules follow customs limits. Declare anything unusual and check the current customs rules before you fly.

What is the emergency number in Namibia?

10111 for police. Ambulance and rescue numbers vary by town — use private services such as E-Med Rescue 24 for medical emergencies.

Do I need a yellow fever certificate for Namibia?

Only if you are arriving from a country with yellow fever transmission. Check the current requirement with your travel clinic or the official health authority before you travel.

How far in advance should I book a Namibia trip?

Book lodges and vehicle hire three to six months ahead for the June to October high season, and earlier for popular Etosha camps. The shoulder months are easier to book at short notice.
