Namibia is a self-drive country, so the daily cost is mostly a vehicle cost. Two people sharing a 4x4 with a rooftop tent split the rental, fuel and park fees, which is why the budget tier lands near N$1,780–3,100 per person per day. A solo traveller in the same vehicle pays close to double for transport.
Camping is the single biggest saving. A campsite bed runs N$250–600 per person, against N$1,200–2,500 for a guest farm or mid-range lodge room. Self-catering from supermarkets in Windhoek or Swakopmund keeps food near N$250–400 per day; lodge dinners push it to N$300–600 or more.
Distances are long and fuel is the second fixed cost. Diesel runs about N$22–24 per litre (check), and a 10–14 night loop from Windhoek through Sossusvlei, Swakopmund, Damaraland and Etosha covers well over 2,000 km. Driving no more than 4–5 hours a day and never after dark is both a safety rule and a fuel rule: night driving on gravel is how trips end early.
Park fees are charged per person per day and rose sharply on 1 April 2026. Etosha and Sossusvlei (Namib-Naukluft) are about N$280 per foreign adult per day (check), with vehicle fees on top. Budget N$280–400 per day for sights if you move between parks.
Book the vehicle and the first and last campsites before you fly. Popular campsites inside Etosha and at Sesriem sell out months ahead in the July–October high season, and last-minute 4x4 hire in Windhoek is the most expensive way to do this trip.

Tips
Share the vehicle. Two or four people in one 4x4 cuts the largest line item per head, and rooftop tents sleep two.
Camp every second or third night and take a lodge night as a treat; the saving funds a night in a guest farm later.
Buy groceries and water in Windhoek or Swakopmund before the long legs. Small remote shops charge more and stock less.
Fuel up whenever you pass a station on the Etosha and Damaraland legs, and pay in cash where card machines are down.
Travel in the May–June or late August–September shoulder rather than the December–January peak or the July–October high season; shoulder rates are usually lower and campsites easier to book.
Skip paid activities you can do yourself: the Sossusvlei 4x4 shuttle (N$250–300) is optional if your vehicle handles the last sand stretch, and self-guided game drives in Etosha are included in the park fee.
Carry cash for fuel attendants' tips and small purchases; the Namibian dollar is pegged 1:1 to the rand and rand is accepted locally.
