Naha is the capital of Okinawa Prefecture and the island's transport hub: the airport, the monorail, the ferry port and most of the hotels sit inside a few kilometres. The city itself is a rebuilt concrete port — the Ryukyu Kingdom's Shuri Castle burned in 2019 and is under reconstruction — so treat Naha as a base for food, markets and island day trips rather than a resort. Two nights covers the city; add nights for the Kerama Islands or a rental car loop of the island.

Get around
Yui Rail (Okinawa monorail) links the airport, Kokusai-dori, the city centre and Shuri; a 24-hour pass costs ¥800 and a 48-hour pass ¥1,400. Buses fill the gaps the monorail misses. Point-to-point bike share is available. A rental car is the practical way to see the rest of the island, but Naha traffic is slow and parking is paid.

- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings

- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Shuri Castle is a reconstruction site after the 2019 fire: parts are closed or scaffolded, so check the official site before you pay.
- Typhoon season runs roughly Jul–Sep: ferries to the Kerama Islands are cancelled at short notice and flights slip.
- Some Kokusai-dori bars and clubs have no posted prices or a cover charge; ask the total before you sit down.
- Budget hostels in Naha are cheap but standards vary widely — read recent reviews, not the photos.
- Rental-car return at Naha Airport needs extra time: the shuttle and the drop-off queue can eat 30–60 min.
Naha is a safe city by any normal measure; the real risks are typhoons and rough seas in Jul–Sep, sunburn, and bar touts on Kokusai-dori with no posted prices. Keep the 110/119 numbers and your embassy details on your phone.
