Nackawic

Stop for 2–3 hours at the World's Largest Axe and a brewery, or sleep one night on a Route 2 drive; there is no bus in and little else to do.

Nackawic is a village of about 940 people on the Saint John River, 65 km west of Fredericton off the Trans-Canada Highway (Route 2). It exists because of a pulp mill built around 1970 for families moved by the Mactaquac Dam, and its one landmark is a 15 m axe. Come for the axe, the riverfront and a craft brewery; treat it as a half-day stop or a single night between Fredericton and Woodstock, not a destination.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.

Getting around

No public transport in the village and no bus service to Nackawic at all. A car is required: Route 2 (Trans-Canada) passes 3 km south, Route 105 runs through the village, and the axe park, mall, arena and golf course are each a short drive apart. Taxis are limited; plan your own wheels.

Watch out

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are driving (ice, moose at dusk) and services that close early or shut for winter. 911 works everywhere.
  • No bus or rail service: without a car you are stuck.
  • Cell coverage is fine in the village but patchy on back roads along the river.
  • Winter driving on Route 2 and Route 105: black ice and moose at dusk.
  • Many food and ice-cream places are seasonal or close early; check hours before you count on dinner.
  • Fuel up in Woodstock or Fredericton if you are heading further west.
