Where to stay in Myanmar: best areas and types of hotel

This page does not plan a Myanmar itinerary. The parent country page carries no trip line, so the first thing to do is read your own government's travel advice and check what your travel insurance actually covers. Some insurers exclude parts of the country and some areas restrict foreign travellers; confirm both before you pay a deposit.

If you have already decided to go, the practical pattern most travellers follow is one or two bases rather than four: Yangon for the international gateway and the widest choice of hotels, Mandalay for the north, and Nyaung Shwe or a lakeside hotel for Inle. Treat that as orientation only, and verify current conditions yourself.

In Yangon, downtown around Sule Pagoda and Bogyoke Aung San Market puts you in walking distance of the street grid, tea shops and the circular train. The Shwedagon area is quieter and closer to the pagoda. North of the centre, around Inya Lake, is where the larger international hotels sit, with gardens and pools but a taxi ride to everything.

In Mandalay, most travellers stay between the palace moat and 26th Street, or along 83rd Street, where guesthouses, restaurants and bike rentals cluster. The Mandalay Hill area is calmer and closer to the pagoda and the old royal palace.

For Inle Lake, Nyaung Shwe is the transport and market town at the north end: guesthouses, trekking agencies and boatmen. Hotels on the lake itself, in villages such as Nampan or Khaung Daing, are reached by boat and are quiet, but you are tied to the hotel for meals.

In Bagan, the choice is New Bagan, Old Bagan or Nyaung U. Nyaung U has the most cheap beds and food; Old Bagan is closest to the temples and priciest; New Bagan sits between the two. All of these descriptions are check: verify that the area is open to foreign travellers and reachable before you book.

Guesthouses are the backbone of budget travel: a private double with fan or air-conditioning, breakfast often included, hot water sometimes only in the morning. Hostels with dorms exist in Yangon, Mandalay and Nyaung Shwe but are not widespread. Mid-range hotels add reliable air-conditioning, a generator, a lift and a proper breakfast. At the top end, Yangon and a few resort towns have colonial-style and international-brand hotels with pools and gyms.

Prices move with season and with the kyat. Treat the bands below as 2026 estimates only and confirm at booking. Many properties list in US dollars but settle in kyat at the day's rate.

High season is usually given as November to February, when the weather is dry and cool and the main towns fill up; the low season runs from March to May and the monsoon from June to October, when some lakeside and beach hotels close. Treat all of that as check: confirm current seasonal patterns and closures with the property before relying on them.

If you decide to go, book direct or through a platform you can cancel. Schedules, access and official advice can change, and a flexible rate is worth a few dollars here.

Carry cash. Cards are reported to work at big hotels in Yangon and Mandalay but fail often elsewhere, and ATMs are unreliable outside the cities. Power cuts are reported outside top hotels, so a generator or an inverter may matter more than a pool. Hot water may be a bucket or a morning-only supply. Wi-Fi is slow and patchy, so a local eSIM is worth having. Air-conditioning is not needed in the cool season in the hills, and Pyin U Lwin and Kalaw get genuinely cold at night.
