Summary by month

Myanmar has three broad seasons rather than four. The cool dry season runs from about November to February and is the window most travellers aim for. The hot dry season covers March to May, with the highest temperatures in the central dry zone around Mandalay and Bagan. The southwest monsoon arrives around late May or June and lasts into October, heaviest on the coast and lighter in the central dry zone.

Use the table as a planning grid, not a forecast. Exact dates shift by a few weeks each year and vary by region: Yangon, Mandalay and the Shan hills behave differently from the coast. Season boundaries and conditions below are approximate (check).

Cool dry season: November to February

This is the window most visitors choose. Skies are clearer, humidity is lower and daytime temperatures are comfortable for walking around Yangon, Mandalay and the archaeological zone at Bagan. Mornings and evenings in the Shan hills, including Pyin U Lwin, can be genuinely cold, so pack a layer even though the lowlands feel warm.

The trade-off is demand. Hotels and transport fill up over the December holidays and into January, and prices are at their highest. Book the popular routes and any internal flights ahead if you are travelling in this window.

  • Best for: first trips, temple days, photography, hill towns
  • Pack: light layers for cool mornings, sun protection for midday
  • Watch: peak-season prices and full internal flights

Hot season: March to May

Temperatures climb through March and peak in April, when the central dry zone can be punishing in the afternoon. Sightseeing works best early morning and late afternoon, with a long break in the middle of the day. Thingyan, the water festival around mid-April, is a major national holiday: expect transport to be busy and many businesses to close for several days.

May is a transitional month. It is still very hot, the first rains arrive and prices drop as demand falls. If you can handle the heat, this is one of the cheaper stretches of the year.

  • Best for: budget travel, early-morning sightseeing
  • Avoid: long midday walks and unshaded temple circuits
  • Watch: Thingyan closures and transport demand in April

Monsoon: June to October

The southwest monsoon brings the wettest weather, heaviest on the coast and in the delta and lighter in the central dry zone. Rain often falls in intense bursts rather than all day, but some roads, ferries and beach areas are affected, and humidity is high. This is the low season for tourism and generally the cheapest time to travel.

October is the shoulder month: rain tapers, the landscape is green and prices have not yet climbed to peak levels. If you want lower costs and can accept some rain, late October is often a reasonable compromise.

  • Best for: low prices, green landscapes, fewer crowds
  • Check: road and ferry conditions before committing to coastal plans
  • Watch: humidity and short-notice itinerary changes

When it is cheapest

Rates are lowest from roughly May through September, outside the December-February peak and the April holiday period. Shoulder months, especially late October and early November, often give a good balance of weather and price. Treat all of this as a pattern, not a quote: check current rates before booking.

Costs also depend on how you travel: internal flights, private cars and licensed guides add up quickly, while buses and trains are cheaper but slower. See the Myanmar travel costs page for a daily budget breakdown.

Practical notes

Entry rules, visa arrangements and internal travel conditions for Myanmar have changed repeatedly in recent years and can change again at short notice. Verify current requirements with your own government's travel advice and the official Myanmar immigration source before you book, and check the safety page on this site.

Domestic transport is the other variable. Internal flights, trains and long-distance buses can be rescheduled or suspended, so build slack into any tight itinerary and avoid same-day connections between a flight and a long overland leg.

  • Confirm visa and entry rules close to departure
  • Read your government's travel advice first
  • Leave buffer days around internal flights and long bus legs
  • Carry cash in kyat for small purchases outside major hotels

Month-by-month weather at a glance

The table below is a rough guide to what each month usually feels like in the main lowland cities. Coastal and hill areas differ: the Shan hills are cooler year-round, and the coast gets more rain than the central dry zone. Patterns are approximate (check).

Questions people ask

What is the best time of year to visit Myanmar?

The cool dry season from about November to February is generally the most comfortable, with lower humidity and clearer skies. December and January are the driest and coolest months in the main lowland cities, but also the busiest and most expensive.

When is the cheapest time to visit Myanmar?

Roughly May to September, during the hot and monsoon months, when demand is lowest. Late October and early November are shoulder months that often balance lower prices with improving weather. All pricing is a 2026 estimate; check current rates.

What is the weather like in Myanmar each month?

November to February is cool and dry; March to May is hot, peaking in April; June to October is the monsoon, wettest on the coast and lighter in the central dry zone. The Shan hills are cooler year-round. Exact timing shifts by a few weeks each year.

Is the monsoon a bad time to visit Myanmar?

Not necessarily. Rain often comes in intense bursts rather than lasting all day, prices are lower and crowds are thinner. The main risks are humidity, some road and ferry disruption, and wetter conditions on the coast. Check conditions locally before committing to coastal plans.

Should I avoid travelling during Thingyan?

Thingyan, the water festival around mid-April, is a major national holiday. Many businesses close for several days and transport is busy. It can be a memorable time to be in the country, but plan around closures and book transport early.

Do I need to check travel advice before booking Myanmar?

Yes. Entry rules and internal travel conditions have changed repeatedly and can change at short notice. Read your own government's travel advice first, then verify visa and entry requirements with the official source before booking anything.
