Mumbai in December: what to expect

Yes — December is one of the two best months to visit Mumbai. Days are warm and dry (roughly 32 °C (90 °F) / 20 °C (68 °F)), rain is rare, and the Konkan coast is in its November–April window. Go early in the month for lower prices; the Christmas–New Year week is peak, so book far ahead.

Weather in December

December sits in Mumbai's dry season. The south-west monsoon has finished, humidity drops and the city gets clear, sunny days with almost no rain. Expect a warm afternoon and a comfortable evening — this is the stretch when locals eat dinner outdoors and the seafront promenades fill after sunset.

The sea stays warm enough for swimming, and the beaches north and south of the city are open for the season. The one thing to plan around is air quality: with little wind and no rain to wash the air, haze can build through the month, worst in the early morning. If you are sensitive to dust or smog, keep strenuous sightseeing for the afternoon and check the daily AQI.

Figures below are 2026 estimates for orientation, not a forecast. Check a live forecast before you fly.

  • Mornings: hazy, coolest, best for markets and walking tours
  • Afternoons: hottest and sunniest; plan indoor or shaded stops
  • Evenings: the best window — Marine Drive, Bandra, outdoor dining

Crowds and prices

December is high season across western India, and Mumbai is the gateway. Domestic travellers arrive for the school holidays, and international visitors pass through on the way to Goa and Kerala. The first three weeks are busy but manageable; from about 20 December the Christmas–New Year week is the tightest of the year for hotels and flights.

Prices follow the crowds. Expect peak-season rates at hotels near the airport, Colaba and Bandra, and higher airfares into Mumbai (BOM) in the last ten days of the month. Trains on the Konkan routes and the popular Mumbai–Goa services sell out early, so book rail and any onward travel as soon as your dates are fixed.

If your dates are flexible, the first half of December gives you the same weather at noticeably lower prices.

  • Book hotels 4–8 weeks ahead for 20 Dec–2 Jan
  • Book trains and flights as early as your dates allow
  • Weekday rates are usually lower than weekends

What's on in December

Mumbai's December calendar is built around the arts, food and the coast. Dates shift year to year, so confirm before you plan a trip around any single event.

The city's cultural season peaks now: gallery openings, theatre, classical music and dance performances cluster in the first half of the month. Christian neighbourhoods such as Bandra and Colaba decorate for Christmas, and midnight services on 24 December draw crowds. New Year's Eve is the busiest night of the year for hotels, restaurants and clubs, with cover charges and set menus; book well ahead.

Outside the city, the beach season along the Konkan coast — Alibag, Kashid and further south — is fully open, and the resorts there fill for the Christmas week.

  • Check local listings a week before you travel for exact dates
  • Public holidays can close some offices and museums
  • Expect surcharges on 24, 25 and 31 December

Where to go

December is the month to be outside. The seafront promenades — Marine Drive and Worli Sea Face — are at their best after sunset, and the city's markets and heritage streets are comfortable to walk in the morning.

Use the dry weather for the day trips that the monsoon makes difficult: the Elephanta caves across the harbour, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Kanheri caves in the northern suburbs, and the beaches at Alibag and Kashid on the Konkan coast. Ferries and coastal roads run on normal schedules now.

If you have more time, December is also the right month to continue south along the coast to Goa, or north into Gujarat and Rajasthan, where the weather is at its best.

  • Marine Drive and Worli Sea Face at sunset
  • Elephanta Island by ferry from the Gateway of India
  • Sanjay Gandhi National Park and Kanheri caves
  • Colaba Causeway and Crawford Market in the morning
  • Alibag and Kashid beaches for a day or a weekend
  • Bandra for cafés, street art and Christmas lights

What to pack

Pack for warm days and mild nights, plus one layer for air conditioning. Mumbai's hotels, malls, cinemas and trains are heavily cooled, so a light jacket or shawl is genuinely useful.

Bring sun protection — hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen — and comfortable shoes for walking on uneven pavements. A reusable water bottle matters; drink bottled or filtered water. If you are sensitive to air quality, a mask for hazy mornings is worth the space.

Modest clothing helps at religious sites: shoulders and knees covered, shoes off before entering. For the beach, a swimsuit and a quick-dry towel are enough.

  • Light cotton clothes for daytime
  • One light layer for air-conditioned interiors
  • Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen
  • Comfortable walking shoes
  • Reusable water bottle
  • Modest outfit for temples and mosques
  • Mask for hazy mornings (optional)
  • Swimwear for the coast

Nearby months

November is nearly as good and slightly cheaper, though the tail of the monsoon can still bring a shower early in the month. January is drier and a touch cooler at night, with crowds easing after the first week. February stays pleasant but warms up, and by March the heat and humidity are building.

If you are choosing between them: December and January are the safest bets for a first trip; November is the value option; February is the last comfortable month before summer.

  • Mumbai in November — similar weather, lower prices, small rain risk
  • Mumbai in January — dry and slightly cooler, crowds ease after New Year
  • Mumbai in February — still good, warming up
  • Mumbai in October — monsoon tail, cheaper, some rain
