Where to stay in Mongolia: best areas and types of hotel
Base in central Ulaanbaatar (Sükhbaatar or Chingeltei) for 2–3 nights, then sleep in ger camps or guesthouses on your countryside loop — that is where the trip actually happens. Book June–August camps 1–3 months ahead; walk-in city hotels are usually fine outside Naadam.

Quick answer
Stay in central Ulaanbaatar for your first 2–3 nights, then move to ger camps or guesthouses along your countryside loop. The city base is for logistics — museums, Gandan, a folk concert, gear and cash. The countryside nights are the trip.
Choose Sükhbaatar or Chingeltei district in the capital if you want to walk to the main square and the restaurants around it. Choose a ger camp inside the park or valley you came for rather than a hotel in the nearest town; the town adds an hour of driving each way and little else.
| Base | Best for | Typical 2026 cost | Book |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central Ulaanbaatar hotel | First nights, logistics, winter trips | ₮150,000–450,000 per double | 1–2 weeks; earlier for Naadam |
| Ger camp (Terelj, Khustai, Gobi, Khövsgöl) | The main summer experience | ₮180,000–400,000 per person with meals | 1–3 months for June–August |
| Guesthouse or family homestay | Budget travel, western provinces, longer loops | ₮60,000–150,000 per person | Days to weeks; call ahead in Ölgii |
| Apartment rental in Ulaanbaatar | Stays over a week, families, remote work | ₮250,000–700,000 per night | Weeks; monthly rates lower |
Ulaanbaatar: which district
Ulaanbaatar spreads along the Tuul river valley and traffic is the thing that decides your day. Staying central matters more here than in most capitals: a hotel 6 km out can mean 40 minutes each way at 08:30 and 18:00.
Sükhbaatar district holds Chinggis Khaan Square, the National Museum, the State Opera and most mid-range and upscale hotels. Chingeltei, just north, is slightly cheaper and still walkable to the square, with the Gandan monastery area nearby. Bayanzürkh and Khan-Uul are residential and cheaper but you will use taxis for everything. The area around the train station and the Zaisan memorial side suits early departures or long-stay apartments rather than a first visit.
- Sükhbaatar: square, museums, best walkability, highest prices
- Chingeltei: Gandan, budget and mid-range guesthouses, 15–25 minutes on foot to the square
- Bayanzürkh and Khan-Uul: cheaper apartments, taxi-dependent
- Near the train station: practical for the Trans-Mongolian or an early domestic flight
- Zaisan side: quiet, views, long-stay apartments
Ger camps, guesthouses and homestays
A ger camp is a cluster of traditional felt tents, usually with beds, a stove or heater, shared or private washblocks and a canteen. Standards range from basic (pit toilets, bucket showers, generator power for a few hours) to comfortable (en-suite bathrooms, hot water, electricity at night). Ask exactly which of those you are buying before you pay; the word "camp" covers both.
Guesthouses and family homestays are the budget option in towns and along the western loop: a room or a spare ger, often with meals cooked by the family. In Ölgii and Hovd, Kazakh and Mongolian families run small guesthouses that double as a place to arrange a driver-guide. In Karakorum and Tsetserleg there are small hotels and guesthouses as well as camps.
Where you sleep should follow what you came to see. Terelj and Khustai are close enough for one or two nights from the capital. The Gobi, Khövsgöl and the Altai need camps spaced along the route, which is why most travellers book a driver-guide package with the nights included rather than booking beds one by one.
| Type | What you get | Watch for |
|---|---|---|
| Tourist ger camp | Bed, meals, shared or private bathroom, activities | Generator hours, cold nights, extra charge for single occupancy |
| Guesthouse | Room in a town house, breakfast, local advice | Shared bathroom, thin walls, cash only |
| Family homestay | A ger or room with a herding family, meals | No fixed schedule; bring a small gift and cash |
| City hotel | Private bathroom, Wi-Fi, breakfast, English at the desk | Traffic if it is not central; Naadam price spikes |
When and how to book
The Mongolian season is short. Camps in Terelj, Khustai, the Gobi and around Khövsgöl open roughly from late May or June to September and many close entirely outside that window. July and the first half of August are the peak: book camps one to three months ahead, and earlier for Naadam week (11–15 July), when Ulaanbaatar hotels fill and prices rise.
Outside summer, city hotels are easy to book a few days ahead and often cheaper. Winter trips are a different product — fewer camps open, more reliance on Ulaanbaatar hotels and a handful of winter lodges. If you are travelling with a tour, the operator normally holds the beds; confirm whether the camp is inside the park and how many hours of driving each day involves.
Pay in tögrög where you can. Many camps and guesthouses quote in US dollars for foreigners but accept local currency, and card machines are unreliable outside the capital. Carry enough cash for the whole countryside leg.
- Book camps 1–3 months ahead for June–August
- Book Ulaanbaatar hotels 1–2 weeks ahead; earlier for Naadam
- Confirm: private or shared bathroom, heating, meals included, distance from the park gate
- Carry cash; cards work in Ulaanbaatar, rarely in camps
Practical notes
Altitude is not a problem in Ulaanbaatar (about 1,350 m) but the Gobi and Altai nights get cold even in July; a camp sleeping bag or extra blanket is normal. Power in remote camps often runs only in the evening, so charge devices in the city. Wi-Fi is common in city hotels and rare in camps; a local SIM or eSIM covers the towns along the way.
Tipping is not expected in city hotels but is normal for drivers, guides and camp staff on tours. Check what your camp package includes before you arrive: meals, horse riding, park entry fees and transfers are sometimes separate. If you have dietary needs, tell the camp when you book; the kitchen is usually a single cook working from a fixed menu.
- Bring a power bank and a headlamp
- Pack layers; ger camp nights can drop near freezing in June
- Confirm whether park fees and activities are included
- Cash for tips and small purchases
Sources and checked date
Prices are 2026 estimates in tögrög and move with the season and the exchange rate. Opening dates for camps vary by year and by operator; confirm directly before you commit.
