Set the phone up before you leave home, not at the airport. Download the offline map pack for the whole country, download the Mongolian translation pack, and log in to your ride-hailing and messaging accounts while you still have reliable data. Once you are on a countryside road with no signal, an app you have not opened before is useless.
For data, buy a prepaid SIM from Unitel, Mobicom, Skytel or G-Mobile at the airport or in town, and bring your passport to register it. An eSIM bought before departure works in town; check the coverage map for the specific route you plan, because 4G fades quickly outside the main corridors and the aimag centres. Tell family you will be off-grid for days on remote loops, and consider a satellite messenger if you are trekking far from the road.
For getting around Ulaanbaatar, a ride-hailing app removes the language barrier and the fare negotiation. UBCab is the name most often cited; whether a given app accepts a foreign card changes, so keep tugrik cash ready and expect to pay in cash if the card fails. Outside the capital, transport is arranged through your guesthouse, driver-guide or a shared jeep — no app covers that.
Google Maps works in Ulaanbaatar and on the main paved routes, but countryside tracks are poorly mapped and some are simply wrong (check). Maps.me or another OpenStreetMap-based app is the usual alternative for dirt tracks (check); treat any map as a hint, not a guarantee, and ask locally. For translation, a downloadable Mongolian offline pack is essential; Mongolian uses Cyrillic, so a keyboard with Cyrillic letters helps when you need to type a place name.
An air-quality app matters if you are in Ulaanbaatar between November and February, when winter smog is a real planning factor. Check the reading before committing to a long day outdoors, and plan indoor or out-of-town alternatives on bad days. Outside that season it is an optional extra, not part of the core setup.

- Screenshot your guesthouse address and phone number in Cyrillic before a countryside drive.
- Keep a power bank: charging points are scarce on long road days.
