Best day trips from Minneapolis: how to get there and what to see

Wichita is the one trip worth clearing a whole day for. It is the largest city in Kansas, with a restored riverfront, several museums and a food scene that beats anything within an hour of Minneapolis. Plan two anchor stops and leave the rest loose: the Keeper of the Plains sculpture and the river walk are free and take under an hour, and the Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum or the Mid-America All-Indian Museum fill another two. Old Town is where you eat before the drive back.

Hutchinson packs two unusual stops into a small town: the Cosmosphere space museum, which holds flown spacecraft and a planetarium, and Strataca, the underground salt museum in a working mine. Both are indoors, which makes Hutchinson the best wet-day or heat-wave option. Allow two to three hours at the Cosmosphere and about two underground, and check tour times before driving, because the mine runs on scheduled lifts.

Salina is the easy half-day: a compact downtown, a Smoky Hill River walk and a couple of small museums. It suits travellers who want a shorter drive and no fixed schedule. Lindsborg, south of Salina, is a Swedish-heritage town with painted Dala horses, a college art gallery and bakeries; it is a pleasant two-stop afternoon rather than a full day.

For landscape rather than town, Kanopolis Lake and Mushroom Rock State Park sit west of Salina, and Wilson Lake sits north-west; both are reservoir country with short trails, sandstone formations and swimming in summer. They are the cheapest trips here — fuel plus a state park vehicle fee — but they need a car, water and sun protection, and there is little shade.
