Where to stay in Minneapolis: best neighborhoods and hotels

Which area is best to stay in Minneapolis? For most visitors, downtown. It puts you within walking distance of the riverfront, the main sports and concert venues and the light-rail line, and it has the largest concentration of hotels at every price point. You can see the city without renting a car.

Choose a different base only for a specific reason: a cheaper suburban motel if you are driving, an airport-area hotel for a very early flight, or a neighbourhood stay if you already know the city and want a quieter street.

Minneapolis and its twin city, Saint Paul, form one metro area, but they are separate downtowns. Most first-time visitors should pick one and stay there rather than splitting nights.

Downtown Minneapolis suits sightseeing on foot. The area around the Mississippi riverfront and the Mill District is quieter and greener, while the blocks near the sports venues are busier and louder on event nights. Both are inside the same walkable core.

If you are in town for a specific campus, hospital or suburb, staying near it usually beats commuting in. Suburban hotels are often cheaper and include parking, but you will need a car for almost everything.

Downtown hotels cluster around the core and the riverfront. Booking a room here means you can walk to dinner, the river and the main venues, and use the light rail for the airport and for Saint Paul. Parking at a downtown hotel is usually an extra daily charge, so factor that in if you drive.

Airport-area hotels in Bloomington and around MSP are built for short stays: frequent shuttles, cheaper rates, easy parking. They are a poor base for sightseeing because you will drive or ride in for everything.

Suburban and outlying towns give you more space and free parking, and often a lower nightly rate. The trade-off is time in the car and a need to plan meals and evenings around driving.

For budget travellers, hostel and budget-motel beds exist but are limited; book early in summer and around major events. Winter rates can be lower outside holiday weekends, but check for weather-related cancellations.

Expect a mid-range downtown double room to run about US$120–250 a night in 2026, more on event weekends and less in the dead of winter outside holidays. Suburban and airport hotels often sit at US$80–180. Hostel and budget beds start around US$40–90.

Add sales tax and any local lodging tax on top of the quoted rate, plus a nightly parking fee at many downtown hotels. Prices shown by US hotels are before tax.

Check the calendar for stadium and arena events before booking; those nights sell out and prices jump. If you are arriving by air, the Metro Transit light-rail link from MSP to downtown is the simplest way in without a car.
