Michigan City

Give Michigan City one night, or two if you want a full Indiana Dunes day: South Shore train from Chicago, 1 h 40 min, about $9–14 each way.

Michigan City is a small Lake Michigan city at the western edge of Indiana Dunes National Park, 1 h 40 min from Chicago on the South Shore Line. It works as a one-night stop or a cheap two-night base for the dunes and beaches, not as a destination on its own. Downtown is walkable; the outlet mall and casino are the other draws.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

Michigan Transit buses run Mon–Sat, roughly hourly, four routes looping from the public library and stopping at Marquette Mall. Downtown, the harborfront and the 11th Street train stop are walkable. For the dunes, Mount Baldy and the outlet mall you need a car or a taxi/rideshare.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Downtown / 11th Street

Walk to restaurants, Barker Mansion and the South Shore 11th Street stop; best for a car-free night.

Harborfront / Washington Park

Near the beach, zoo and casino; a car helps for the last stretch.

Outlet mall / US-20 corridor

Chain hotels and free parking; convenient if you are driving to the dunes.

Watch out

Safety

Generally safe for visitors. Downtown and the harborfront are fine in daylight and early evening; use normal care around the casino and outlet lots at night, and keep to marked dune trails.
  • South Shore trains stop in the middle of 11th Street; wait for the signal before crossing.
  • Late-night and early-morning South Shore trains only serve the Carroll Avenue station, not 11th Street.
  • Lake-effect snow and ice on the dunes in winter; stay on marked trails.
  • Mount Baldy access can be restricted to ranger-led walks at times: check the NPS site before you go.
