Mersch is a small town of about 9,400 people where the Alzette, Mamer and Eisch rivers meet, 20 minutes north of the capital on train line 10. It is the practical gateway to the Valley of the Seven Castles and the Eisch valley, and it has one of Luxembourg's better fortified castles at Pettingen. Almost nobody needs a night here: the town is a half-day trip from Luxembourg City, and the free national transport makes that trip cheap and easy.
