What individual things cost
Street food is the single biggest lever. A pair of dholl puri costs less than a coffee in most European cities, and a Phoenix beer in a bar is a fraction of a resort cocktail. Self-catering from supermarkets in Port Louis, Curepipe or Grand Baie pulls the food line down further.
Transport is the second lever. Buses are cheap but slow and stop early; a hire car at €30–50 a day only pays off if you are two or more people moving between beaches and inland sights. Airport transfers and taxis are priced per trip, so ask before you get in.

Money, cards and cash
The currency is the Mauritian rupee (MUR). Cards work widely in hotels, restaurants and supermarkets; markets and small shops prefer cash. ATMs are common in towns and at the airport, so you rarely need to carry large amounts.
Keep small notes for buses, stalls and tips. If you are staying in a resort, most extras go on the room bill, which makes the final checkout the moment your budget is really decided.
How to spend less
Book a guesthouse or self-catering apartment rather than a resort, eat one meal a day at a stall or market, and use buses for short hops. Two bases instead of four cuts transfer costs and wasted days.
Travel in the cooler, drier months if your dates are flexible, and book boat days and car hire locally rather than through a hotel concierge.
