Mauricie is the stretch of Quebec between Montréal and Québec City where the St. Maurice River meets the St. Lawrence, then runs north into the Laurentians. The southern towns — Trois-Rivières, Shawinigan, the Chemin du Roy villages — are a 1.5-hour drive or a bus or train ride from either city, so they work as a two-night add-on rather than a destination on their own. North of Shawinigan the region turns into lakes, forest and outfitters; that part needs a car and more time.

St. Lawrence lowlands (Trois-Rivières, Shawinigan): June to September is the reliable window; January and February sit well below freezing with snow. Autumn colour peaks late September to mid-October.
Haute-Mauricie (La Tuque and north): Shorter warm season, blackflies in late May and June, snow from November; many outfitters run ice fishing and snowmobile seasons instead.

Summer weekends and the early-October buckwheat festival are the busiest; book Trois-Rivières and Shawinigan rooms ahead for those.
