Maumere
Give Maumere one night as a Flores road or flight stop, or two if you want a beach base east of town; skip it as a destination in its own right.
Maumere is a small port town on Flores's north coast, useful mainly as the island's eastern air gateway and a break on the long road between Ende and Labuan Bajo. The town itself has little to see; the beaches and dive sites sit 3–30 km east or west, so where you sleep matters more than what you do. Two nights is enough for most travellers, one if you are only passing through.

- Karaoke bars outside town are the local nightlife; some double as venues for prostitution.
Maumere is a low-crime town; the real issues are unlit roads after dark, scooter riding without a licence or helmet, and strong currents at some beaches. Use reef-safe judgement in the water and keep valuables out of sight at markets.
