Mashonaland is northern Zimbabwe's Shona heartland and the country's working core: Harare, the capital, plus farmland, small towns and the road and rail lines that run north to the Zambezi. It is not the safari country most visitors fly in for. Come for a night or two in Harare, a stop at Chinhoyi Caves, and the practical business of arriving, banking and stocking up before you head to Victoria Falls, Hwange, Mana Pools or the Eastern Highlands.

The highveld is milder than the Zambezi valley: bring a fleece for June–July mornings even though Zimbabwe is tropical.
