How to get to Marshall Islands: airports, flights and border crossings

Majuro's Amata Kabua International Airport (MJB) is the arrival point for almost every visitor. It sits on the Majuro atoll rim, a short drive from the Delap–Uliga–Djarrit town area, so you can land and be at your hotel within 15–20 minutes.

Kwajalein (KWA) has an airfield inside the US Army Garrison on Kwajalein Atoll. It is not a public tourist gateway: you need an invitation or official business, and leisure travellers are normally turned away. Do not book a ticket expecting to clear immigration there.

Outer atolls have small airstrips served by domestic island-hopper flights, but those are for travel within the country, not for arriving from abroad.

The Marshall Islands are reached through a small number of Pacific hubs. United operates the main services linking Majuro with Honolulu and Guam, and the same aircraft often continues through other Micronesian stops. Schedules change seasonally and seats are limited, so book early — this is not a route where last-minute fares stay cheap.

From the US, the usual path is a flight to Honolulu, then the connection to Majuro. From Australia, look at Brisbane connections; from Asia, Tokyo is the common jumping-off point. From the UK, Canada and New Zealand you will almost always route through one of those hubs, so treat the trip as two or three flights, not one.

Because frequencies are low, a missed connection can cost you days rather than hours. Build a buffer night at the hub airport if your onward flight is tight.

There are no land borders. The only alternative to flying is arriving by private yacht or on a cargo or supply ship, normally into Majuro's lagoon. Yachts clear in with the port authority and immigration; expect to show passports, boat papers and an onward plan.

Cargo and government supply ships also call at Ebeye and other atolls, but they are working vessels, not a bookable passenger service. If you are considering this route, arrange it well in advance and confirm the paperwork with the shipping agent.

The US dollar is the currency, so there is no exchange step on arrival. Cards are accepted at Majuro hotels and larger stores, but carry some cash for taxis, small shops and any outer-atoll trip.

Mobile coverage is best in Majuro and patchy elsewhere. If you need data on landing, sort an eSIM or a local SIM before you fly rather than relying on airport Wi-Fi.

Travel insurance matters here more than on a mainland trip: medical evacuation from an outer atoll is expensive and slow. Check that your policy covers remote-island evacuation before you book flights.

Finally, confirm your entry paperwork. US citizens enter freely; most other passports receive a visa on arrival, but rules and fees can change, so verify with the Marshall Islands government or your airline before departure.
