Marrakech in December: what to expect

December is winter in Marrakech, but winter here means cool bright days rather than grey ones. Afternoon temperatures sit near 19 °C, and the sun is strong enough for a jacket-free lunch on a rooftop. The moment the sun drops behind the Koutoubia, the temperature falls fast: evenings and early mornings are close to 5 °C, and in a clear spell can touch 0 °C.

Rain arrives in short, heavy bursts rather than all-day drizzle, usually a handful of wet days across the month. Mornings start misty and cold, then clear by mid-morning. Daylight is short — roughly 08:15 to 18:30 — so plan outdoor sights and the souks for the middle of the day.

The bigger weather story is altitude. The High Atlas above about 2,000 m holds snow, and the Tizi n'Tichka pass on the road to Ouarzazate can close for hours or a day after a storm. Desert nights at Merzouga and Zagora are near freezing, so a Sahara trip in December needs a real sleeping bag and a heated camp, not a summer one.

Early and mid December is one of the quietest, cheapest stretches of the Marrakech year. Riad rates fall well below spring and autumn levels, guides have space, and you can walk Jemaa el-Fna without a shoulder-to-shoulder crush. This is the window to book if you want the medina to yourself.

That changes sharply around Christmas. From roughly 24 December to 2 January the city fills with European holiday traffic, riads sell out and prices jump to spring levels or higher. Restaurant tables on New Year's Eve need booking weeks ahead. If your dates are fixed to that week, book accommodation two to three months out.

Two practical notes. Riads are built for shade, not for cold: many rooms have no heating unless you ask, so confirm a heater or an open fire before booking, and pack layers for indoors. Second, the desert camps that are pleasant in October are genuinely cold in December — pay for a camp with proper bedding and heating rather than the cheapest option.

December has no major national festival in Marrakech, which is part of its appeal: the city runs on its normal rhythm. The main fixed date is New Year's Day on 1 January, a public holiday, with the celebrations concentrated on 31 December in hotels, riads and restaurants around Gueliz and the medina.

Christmas itself is not a public holiday in Morocco, but Marrakech's tourist restaurants and hotels mark it with set menus and events. Expect higher prices and full venues on 24, 25 and 31 December.

The lunar calendar matters for planning: Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year and is expected to begin in February 2027, so it does not affect December 2026. Check exact dates closer to travel, since the start depends on the sighting of the moon.

Marrakech itself is at its most comfortable for walking. The medina, the Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs and the Jardin Majorelle are all pleasant in the middle of the day, and the souks are quieter than in spring. Jemaa el-Fna is best in the late afternoon, when the food stalls light up and the temperature is still bearable.

For day trips, the Ourika valley and the lower Atlas foothills work well; higher trails are snowbound. Essaouira on the Atlantic is mild and often sunny in December, though windy, and makes a good two-night break from the cold nights inland. The Sahara is doable — Merzouga and Zagora have warm days — but only with a properly heated camp and warm layers for the night.

Avoid high-altitude trekking: Toubkal and the upper valleys are for May to October. If you want mountains, stay low and check road conditions on the Tichka pass before any drive toward Ouarzazate.

Pack for two climates in one day. A light jacket or fleece for the morning and evening, a T-shirt or light shirt for the afternoon, and a warm mid-layer for riad evenings, which can feel colder than the street. A hat and sunglasses are useful even in winter, since the sun is low and bright.

Bring a rain shell rather than an umbrella for the short downpours, comfortable broken-in shoes for the medina's uneven lanes, and a scarf or shawl for mosque-adjacent areas and for warmth. If you are heading to the desert, add thermal base layers, a hat and gloves for the night, and a head torch for the camp.

November is milder and slightly busier, with warmer evenings and the desert still comfortable. January is colder still, with the same bright days and the lowest prices of the year outside the New Year week. February brings almond blossom in the valleys and the start of the shift toward spring.

If you want the classic Marrakech window, aim for October or November, or wait for March. December trades warmth for quiet and low rates — a good deal if you accept cold nights.
