Maramureș is Romania's wooden-church and village region in the far north-west, against the Ukrainian border. It is not a quick add-on: the roads are slow, buses only serve main towns, and the sights are spread across valleys. With three nights and a car you can see the Merry Cemetery, the UNESCO wooden churches and ride the Vaser Valley steam train without rushing. Without a car, base in Sighetu Marmației or Baia Mare and accept fewer stops.

- Maramureș is a long way from Brașov and Sibiu: a car from Cluj takes about 3 hours to Baia Mare, longer to Sighetu Marmației.
- Village buses do not list small stops; you often board and ask the driver to drop you, which is normal but not guaranteed.
- Hitchhiking is common and locals expect a few lei in return; do not rely on it as your only plan.
