Manbij

Skip unless you are already in northern Syria for a specific reason: the ancient city has almost no standing sights, and the castle Qal'at Najm is the only intact landmark. Half a day covers it.

Manbij is an ancient city that was a key station on the Seleucid road between Antioch and the Tigris, and later a Roman city. Almost all historical structures were destroyed during the civil war. The one exception is Qal'at Najm, a 12th-century castle on the Euphrates. The city is now under the Syrian transitional government (since December 2024). Most travellers pass through on the way to the Euphrates valley or Kobani.

Safety

Manbij is under the Syrian transitional government as of late 2024, but the security situation in northern Syria remains fluid. Read your government's travel advisory and check local conditions before travelling. The city itself is quiet, but roads to Qal'at Najm and Kobani may have checkpoints.
  • The security situation in northern Syria changes quickly: read your government's travel advice before any trip.
  • Almost all pre-war sights have been destroyed; only Qal'at Najm remains intact.
  • Roads to Qal'at Najm may be unpaved or in poor condition; confirm with a local driver.
  • Cash only: bring Syrian pounds or US dollars; no ATMs may work.
