Skip as a base: Louiseville is a 2–4 hour stop on Route 138 between Montréal and Trois-Rivières, best in spring or fall for Lac Saint-Pierre birdwatching.
Louiseville is a small Mauricie town on the north shore of Lac Saint-Pierre, on the Chemin du Roy between Montréal and Trois-Rivières. Its draw is not the town itself but the lake: every spring and fall, hundreds of thousands of migratory birds land on Lac Saint-Pierre and the flooded fields around it. Add the heritage houses along avenue Saint-Laurent, the Pointe-à-Caron lookout and the October buckwheat pancake festival, and you have a half-day stop, not a destination.

Get around
A car is the realistic option: sights are spread along Route 138 and out to the lake shore. The MRC's Express Bleu shuttle links Louiseville with Trois-Rivières on weekdays and needs a reservation; it is not a sightseeing service.
