Los Angeles in October: what to expect

October is the tail of the dry season on the California coast. Mornings often start grey with marine layer cloud near the beaches, burning off by late morning; downtown and the San Fernando Valley are usually sunny from the start. Rain is uncommon but not impossible — the first storm of the season sometimes arrives late in the month.

Temperatures are mild rather than hot: expect shirtsleeves in the afternoon and a light jacket after sunset, when the marine air comes back in. Inland, the valleys and the San Gabriel foothills run several degrees warmer than Santa Monica or Long Beach.

The month's wildcard is the Santa Ana wind: dry, warm air pushed from the desert toward the coast. It can push downtown temperatures well above 30 °C for a day or two and raises wildfire risk in the hills. Check air quality and fire advisories before hiking.

October sits in the sweet spot after the summer peak and before the Thanksgiving–Christmas run. Theme parks, the Hollywood sign trail and the Getty are noticeably calmer on weekdays; weekends and any school holiday week still fill up.

Hotel rates in 2026 typically run below July–August levels, with the biggest savings midweek and in beach-adjacent neighbourhoods rather than Hollywood or Downtown. Flights follow the same pattern — book two to three months out for the best fares, and expect a bump around Halloween weekend.

Rental cars are the other cost to watch. You need one for the beaches, the valleys and day trips, and October rates are moderate; parking fees at hotels add up fast, so check before booking.

Halloween is the dominant theme. Theme parks run Halloween events through the month, and the last week brings costume parties and street celebrations, with West Hollywood's Santa Monica Boulevard parade the largest. Tickets for the big park events sell out, so book ahead.

Beyond Halloween, October is a strong month for sport and culture: baseball playoffs can run into the month, the NBA and NHL seasons open, and the city's museums and concert halls are in full swing after the summer break. Farmers' markets and food festivals continue through the month.

October suits the whole city rather than one district. The coast is at its most usable: Santa Monica, Venice and Manhattan Beach have warm afternoons and thinner crowds than in summer, and the bike path along the sand is pleasant without the July crush.

Inland, the Hollywood sign hike and Griffith Observatory are best early, before the afternoon heat and the haze. The Getty and LACMA are good indoor options if a Santa Ana day makes the air dusty. For a longer day, the Santa Monica Mountains and Malibu give you coastal drives, beaches and short trails within an hour of the city.

This is also a good month to add a day trip: Catalina Island, the Antelope Valley and the desert parks east of the city are cooler than in summer. Check road and fire conditions before heading into the hills.

Pack for two seasons in one day: light layers for warm, sunny afternoons and a jacket or hoodie for cool evenings, especially near the coast. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else in a city where you will cover a lot of ground.

Add sunscreen and sunglasses — the autumn sun is still strong — plus a refillable water bottle. If you plan to hike, bring a hat and check air quality on Santa Ana days. A light rain shell is worth the space if you are travelling late in the month.

September is warmer and slightly busier, with the summer season winding down. November is cooler and quieter, with Thanksgiving week the main spike. December brings holiday lights and higher prices. If you want the driest, warmest version of this trip, October is the pick.
