Best time to visit Los Angeles: weather, crowds and events by month

Los Angeles has a mild, mostly dry climate, so the question is less about whether you can visit and more about crowds, price and heat. The two sweet spots are spring (April–May) and autumn (late September–October): comfortable daytime temperatures, little rain, and hotel rates below the summer peak.

Summer (late June–August) is the classic beach season and the busiest, most expensive stretch. Winter (December–March) is mild by US standards but carries most of the year's rain, and the coast can sit under a marine layer of low cloud until midday.

If your trip is built around the beach and long evenings, come in July–September and accept the crowds. If it is built around walking, studios, museums and day trips, spring or autumn is the better call.

January and February are the coolest and wettest months, with daytime highs around 18–20 °C downtown and colder nights. Rain arrives in a handful of heavy storms rather than constant drizzle, so a short trip can still be mostly dry. This is the cheapest window outside holiday weeks. Awards season (roughly February–March) pushes up hotel rates in Beverly Hills, Hollywood and Downtown.

March and April bring spring break traffic to the beaches and theme parks, but the weather improves steadily: April days sit around 22 °C with low rain risk. May is one of the best months of the year — warm, dry, and still short of the summer crowds. Note the coastal marine layer: May and June mornings in Santa Monica and Venice can be grey until early afternoon.

June through August is summer: hot inland (the valleys regularly pass 35 °C), warm but often overcast at the coast in the morning, and busy everywhere. Hotel prices peak, and popular attractions such as the studios and theme parks sell out days ahead. September stays hot — often the hottest month inland — but crowds thin sharply after Labor Day, which makes it good value.

October is the other standout: warm days, cooler evenings, low rain risk and moderate prices. November is quiet apart from Thanksgiving week, which is one of the busiest travel periods of the year in the US. December is mild but can be wet; holiday lights and events lift prices around Christmas and New Year.

Los Angeles hotel rates swing more than the weather does. As a 2026 estimate, a mid-range hotel room downtown or in Hollywood runs roughly $180–280 per night in the low season (January–early March, November) and $250–400 in summer and around holidays. Beach-adjacent rooms in Santa Monica and Venice carry a premium year-round.

Flights follow the same pattern: fares into LAX are usually lowest in January–February and highest in late June–August and the December holidays. Car rental is worth booking early in summer; parking at hotels is often $30–50 per night, which is easy to overlook when comparing rooms.

Museum and attraction tickets change little by season, but timed-entry and studio-tour slots sell out in summer, so book those before you book the flight if a specific date matters.

Build the day around the marine layer: beaches and coastal drives in the afternoon, inland sights and museums in the morning. In summer, start outdoor walks before 10am and keep the middle of the day for shade or indoors.

Check the calendar before fixing dates. Major conventions, awards season and holiday weekends can double room rates in specific neighbourhoods even in an otherwise quiet month. Wildfire season (roughly late summer to autumn) can affect air quality and mountain access; check local advisories close to your dates.

If you are flying in, sort the airport transfer before arrival — LAX to Downtown is a long ride in traffic, and the time of day matters more than the distance.
