Los Angeles in July: what to expect

July is the middle of the dry season on the California coast: rain is rare, days are long and the sun is strong. The coast and the basin behave differently. Santa Monica, Venice and the South Bay often start with a marine layer - low cloud that burns off by late morning or early afternoon - so mornings can feel cool and grey even when it is 30 °C in the Valley.

Inland, the San Fernando Valley, Pasadena and the foothills run several degrees hotter than the beach and can push past 35 °C in a heat spell. The desert side of the county, around Palmdale and Lancaster, is hotter still. UV is high all month; sunscreen and water matter more than an umbrella.

July is peak season. Schools are out, the 4 July holiday weekend is the single busiest stretch, and hotel rates in Santa Monica, Hollywood and Downtown sit at their yearly high. Theme parks - Disneyland in Anaheim, Universal Studios Hollywood, Knott's Berry Farm - sell out on holiday weekends and run long queues most days.

The upside is that everything is open, including beach concessions, harbour tours and the outdoor movie and concert season. If your dates are flexible, the last week of July and the first days of August are marginally calmer than the 4 July window, and weekday hotel rates beat weekends. Book accommodation and any timed theme-park tickets before you fly.

The month is built around 4 July. Fireworks and parades run at venues across the county, from the beaches to the Rose Bowl area in Pasadena, and roads and parking near the big displays fill hours before dark. Expect heavy traffic on the 4th and the days either side.

Beyond the holiday, July is outdoor-concert and festival season: the Hollywood Bowl summer season, free and ticketed concerts in the parks, and county-fair-adjacent events later in the summer. Dates and line-ups change every year, so check the official listings before you plan a night around one.

Use July for the coast and the water. Santa Monica, Venice, Manhattan Beach and Malibu are at their best, though mornings may be cloudy. Start beach days late morning when the marine layer lifts. Catalina Island is a good day trip or overnight, with the ferry from Long Beach or San Pedro; book ahead in peak season.

For culture, the museums along Museum Row and in Exposition Park are air-conditioned refuges on hot afternoons. Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood Hills are best at sunset rather than midday. If you want heat and dry air, the desert side of the county and the Antelope Valley are options, but go early and carry water. For a cooler escape, head up to the mountains or along the Central Coast.

Pack for warm days and cool, damp coastal mornings: light layers, a light jacket or hoodie for the beach and evenings, and a hat and sunglasses. Sunscreen, refillable water bottle and comfortable walking shoes cover most days. If you are heading inland or to the desert, add more water, a wide-brim hat and sun protection for the car.

A small umbrella is optional - July rain is rare - but a light windbreaker helps with morning cloud and sea breeze. If you plan to swim in the ocean, note the water is cool; a rash guard or wetsuit helps.

June is cooler and often cloudier along the coast, with lower prices and fewer crowds. August is hotter inland and still busy, with the same peak-season rates. September is the local favourite: warm water, smaller crowds after Labor Day and lower hotel prices. If you want the classic warm-and-dry Los Angeles trip without the worst of the peak, aim for late September or October.
