Lorain County is a low-key stretch of Lake Erie shoreline and small downtowns 30–45 minutes west of Cleveland. It is not a sightseeing blockbuster: the draw is Oberlin's college-and-arts scene, the lakefront in Lorain and Vermilion, and small-town Main Streets. Sleep in Elyria for the Amtrak stop and highway access, or Oberlin for walkability; treat the lake towns as half-day drives. Two nights covers it; one night works if you are passing between Cleveland and Sandusky.
