Longueuil is a 240,000-person suburb on the south shore of the St. Lawrence, 20 minutes by metro from downtown Montréal. Its draw is small: a compact Old Longueuil strip on rue Saint-Charles, a riverside park with skyline views, and three large free nature parks. Most travellers sleep in Montréal and come over for an afternoon; a night here only makes sense if you want cheaper parking, an early south-shore start, or the Saint-Hubert airport.

Getting around

The Montréal metro Yellow line ends at Longueuil–Université-de-Sherbrooke, 20 min from Berri-UQAM. RTL buses fan out from Terminus Longueuil; most routes are infrequent outside rush hour. Old Longueuil is walkable, but the nature parks and Saint-Hubert need a car or a long bus ride.

Watch out

Safety

Longueuil is a low-risk suburb; the real issues are winter ice, unlit park trails after dark and long waits for infrequent buses. Rue Saint-Charles is busy and safe in the evening.
  • Distances are suburban: Parc Michel-Chartrand and Parc de la Cité are 5–10 km from the metro, not a walk.
  • Some sights are by appointment only (Maison Daniel-Poirier, Museum of Women) — call at least 48 h ahead.
  • Winter sidewalks ice over; boots with grip matter more than a coat.
  • Rue Saint-Charles bars are quiet midweek; last metro back to Montréal is around 01:00 (check).
